Chapter 16 The Pitiful Side
Even hateful people have pitiful aspects, but not…
“I was wandering in the east today and met a child. She said her name was Wen Shu,” Meng Huan said unconsciously at the dinner table.
Wen Zhaoyin had been so busy these days that she could barely keep up. She had just returned from outside and didn’t know anything yet.
Upon suddenly hearing this, her pupils contracted slightly, her chopsticks paused, and she turned to ask him, “What did you talk about?”
She didn’t have time to conceal her emotions, and that look in her eyes startled Meng Huan. He truthfully recounted everything that had happened today.
After listening, Wen Zhaoyin turned back to continue picking up food, and even added a piece of fish for him, “Why did you think of going there? It’s quite far from Qingzhu Garden to Heyuan.”
She actually hadn’t figured out Meng Huan’s position in the Wen family yet, to the extent that she hadn’t even given him a title now, so she didn’t want her daughter to see him now.
Fortunately, they only had a simple exchange and didn’t say anything extra, otherwise it would have been a bit troublesome.
Meng Huan came to his senses, thinking that her anger just now might have been a burst of maternal instinct. Sometimes women become tougher and more sensitive after becoming mothers.
His mother was like this after giving birth to his sister. Because his biological father, after divorcing his mother, had revenged by molesting the daughter his mother had with his stepfather.
Although he was completely unaware, he still had that beast’s blood flowing in him. Before he was economically independent and able to leave home, he had always been subjected to various forms of mental abuse from his birth mother and stepfather.
So whenever he encountered similar situations, Meng Huan would involuntarily want to explain, to soothe the other person’s emotions.
“You were quite scary just now. Please don’t misunderstand, I didn’t intentionally approach Wen Shu. I wanted to go to Heyuan only because I had finished walking the west side, and you weren’t home…”
As he explained, he observed her expression, finding no abnormality on her face. That fleeting murderous look from earlier seemed like an illusion.
“I…” He wanted to say something more.
Wen Zhaoyin had already put down her chopsticks, then wiped her hands and stood up, “It’s fine, I was just asking. You should eat quickly.”
“I have some matters to deal with today, so I won’t come tonight. Rest early.”
Since the last time she stayed over, she had been sleeping in Qingzhu Garden every night, but today she suddenly said she had something to do and wouldn’t come. Meng Huan knew without thinking that it was related to him meeting Wen Shu today.
What was this about? Was she playing cold violence in front of him? Just because he accidentally met her daughter and exchanged a few words, she would treat him like this?
It was exactly the same way his mother dealt with things, which thoroughly angered Meng Huan.
“Stop right there!”
He didn’t want to be like a bullied little wife, accepting everything passively, smiling when she came and crying when she left. He had his own temper too.
It wasn’t like anyone couldn’t live without the other. Who was she putting on this face for? Besides, he hadn’t done anything wrong.
“You explain yourself clearly before you leave. You’re the one who trapped me in the Wen family, and you even said before that you wanted to have children with me. Now I just saw your daughter once and you’re like this?”
“Honestly, if you just want to play around, forget it. My time is precious, and I don’t want to waste it on you. There are plenty of women waiting for me out there!”
Wen Zhaoyin, who had walked halfway, stopped when called. After hearing this ‘shocking’ speech, she couldn’t help but raise her hand to press her brow.
She walked back, grabbed Meng Huan’s fist clenched in anger, and pried it open bit by bit, “Open your hand, so your nails don’t hurt your palm. I really have something to do, and probably won’t sleep tonight, that’s why I said I wouldn’t come over.”
“It has nothing to do with Wen Shu, really,” she emphasized once more.
She was so gentle now that Meng Huan was dazzled, his emotions miraculously soothed.
Perhaps because he had never encountered such tolerance in modern times, he was now completely unable to distinguish whether Wen Zhaoyin was genuine or pretending, but deep down he chose to believe his feelings.
“Then stay. I sleep very soundly, you definitely won’t disturb me.”
“Don’t go, okay?” Meng Huan exposed his vulnerability for the first time, subconsciously hoping to beg for a bit of vague love.
Not the general love between men and women, but those he lacked in family life.
He was like a snail, carefully extending its tentacles. If this attempt was successful, he would use the same method next time. If rejected this time, he would quickly retract into his shell and become a heartless jerk.
After all, that’s how it had always been before.
The choice was in Wen Zhaoyin’s hands. She might not have known that her decision could change a person, but she still made the best choice.
“Alright, I’ll stay.”
Hearing this, Meng Huan couldn’t help but smile. The heavy mood from earlier instantly disappeared. Here, he wouldn’t be misunderstood, nor would he be insulted or accused without reason. Someone would listen to his explanations, and someone would be willing to believe him.
In his happiness, he ate three big bowls of rice in a row. If not stopped, he might have eaten a fourth.
He didn’t know what was wrong with him lately, his appetite had almost doubled, and he was easily drowsy and felt tired.
Meng Huan thought it might be the original body growing, so he didn’t pay much attention to it.
