Why was it so hard to believe?

And he felt wronged?

Wang Zhao frowned, her temples throbbing with pain. She felt that perhaps she had misjudged the relationship between the original owner of this body and Li Zhenguan.

Could it be that their relationship was closer?

Had the original owner already made promises to him?

She had no way of knowing, but the expression on the young man’s face before her was undoubtedly that of someone who had been abandoned after being taken advantage of.

The atmosphere between the two became silent, neither speaking.

Li Zhenguan lowered his head. Wang Zhao seemed to be able to see the nape of his neck exposed as he bowed his head. The snow-white skin came into view, and the rounded spine made this young man’s slender back appear even more fragile.

She thought absent-mindedly that the men in this world all seemed quite thin, with an aesthetic somewhat reminiscent of the “white, thin, and young” beauty standard from her previous life.

When dinner time came, Li Zhenguan was naturally invited to stay and eat together.

The meal was eaten in silence. Even Wang Zhao’s parents noticed that something wasn’t quite right between the two of them, occasionally glancing at Wang Zhao, who was eating calmly. The smile on Li Zhenguan’s face had faded somewhat, and his whole demeanor was wilted.

Wang Zhao, however, acted as if she hadn’t noticed anything, eating her meal with an unchanged expression, as if she hadn’t seen the disappointment of the person beside her at all.

Wang Zhao’s mother remained taciturn as usual during the meal. Her father struggled to maintain the atmosphere at the dinner table, occasionally exchanging a few words with Li Zhenguan and using serving chopsticks to help him with dishes, telling him not to be polite.

The dinner ended in a strange atmosphere, with only Wang Zhao and her mother seemingly completely unaffected.

After eating half their fill, Wang Zhao’s mother went out for a walk. Wang Zhao helped her father clear the dishes and put them in the dishwasher before being shooed out by him.

“How can we let Li Zhenguan, a guest, stay outside alone? Go out and keep him company, talk to him,” her father said, obviously not giving up. “Li Zhenguan is such a well-behaved and obedient child, and his appearance isn’t bad either. I don’t know what you’re unsatisfied with.”

Hearing this, it seemed that the original owner didn’t like this matchmaking prospect either. Then why did Li Zhenguan look like he had been abandoned after she said those words?

Wang Zhao had a bit of a headache. She didn’t understand why the original owner, at only twenty-five or twenty-six years old, needed to go on matchmaking dates. And her father had the attitude that if his daughter missed this opportunity, she would be single for life.

Pushed out of the kitchen by her father, she had no choice but to leave. As soon as she came out, she met Li Zhenguan’s gaze. It was clear that after being chased out of the kitchen by her father, he had been staring at her the whole time.

Meeting her gaze, he immediately averted his eyes as if burned, sitting uneasily on the sofa.

Neither of them spoke. Wang Zhao took a few steps closer to him, looking at the young man’s soft hair. She sighed, her heart unconsciously softening a bit. Compared to her actual age, the twenty-year-old Li Zhenguan was still a child, five or six years younger than her.

“Come on, I’ll take you home,” she said.

Li Zhenguan looked up at her.

His eyes were bright, and his cool white skin looked like it would leave a red mark if pinched.

A child raised in a wealthy family.

After several seconds, he finally stood up. He wasn’t short, considered tall in this world, with a slender figure. Under Wang Zhao’s gaze, he slowly let out a sound of agreement.

Only then did she breathe a sigh of relief. In her view, Li Zhenguan was like a ticking time bomb. Who knew when he might explode? It would be best to send him away quickly to feel at ease.

After informing her father in the kitchen, Wang Zhao took Li Zhenguan out.

After dinner, it was already dark outside. Their area was an old district, with very old buildings that had no elevators, only stairs.

In these decades-old buildings, the stairways were very dark, with yellowish lights that worked only intermittently. Some corners were pitch black, completely beyond the reach of the light. When walking down the stairs with the light behind, the area beneath one’s feet was completely dark and unclear.

The stairway was narrow. Wang Zhao took out her phone and turned on the flashlight to lead the young man down the stairs.

“This is an old district. These lights haven’t been changed for a long time. Be careful when going down the stairs, watch your step,” Wang Zhao warned as they descended.

A soft sound of agreement came from beside her, and then she felt a gentle tug on her sleeve.

Wang Zhao glanced over but didn’t refuse, continuing down the stairs.

At this time, there was no one else in the stairway. It was very quiet, a suitable place for a conversation.

So she hesitated slightly but then decisively opened her mouth: “Li…”

“Li Zhenguan, I don’t think we’re suitable for developing a relationship beyond that of matchmaking prospects.” She thought for a moment and decided to call him directly by name.

Somehow, she just felt that the title “Mr. Li” didn’t suit that excessively youthful face. She stopped and looked at the person beside her.

“You understand my meaning, right? If possible, we can be friends in the future.”

Li Zhenguan didn’t say anything. He seemed to have fallen completely silent, lowering his head again. His face was completely hidden in the flickering light, like the darkness permeating the stairway.

Wang Zhao felt that she had made herself clear enough, so she didn’t speak again.

Little did she expect that when they reached a landing, Li Zhenguan suddenly grabbed her sleeve and spoke first, showing weakness: “Elder sister, what happened three months ago was my fault. I shouldn’t have done that. I won’t do it again in the future. Can you forgive me just this once?”

His voice was very soft, with a hint of hoarseness, as if he was crying.

Wang Zhao wasn’t good at handling situations like this. A man crying and begging for forgiveness from her – it was hard to describe the feeling. Goosebumps rose all over her body, and she couldn’t say a word. At this moment, she felt like a scumbag who had taken advantage of someone and then abandoned them.

Moreover, she wasn’t clear about what had happened three months ago. Heaven knows why she had to bear the consequences of the original owner’s actions.

As she remained silent, Li Zhenguan’s crying gradually subsided, and his voice became softer. His heart sank deeper and deeper, and his eyes grew increasingly dark.

Wang Zhao thought the person in front of her had finished crying. She felt relieved and was about to go down the stairs to send him away and be done with it when she was suddenly embraced.

The person hugging her spoke at this moment. Because the stairway was so quiet, even the man’s soft voice reached her ears.

“Wang Zhao, I’m pregnant. It’s been three months already.” He guided one of her hands to rest on his flat abdomen.

It was as if a thunderclap had exploded right next to her ear.

In the flickering light of the stairway, Wang Zhao’s gaze passed over the shoulder of the person in her arms and fell on a spot at the bottom of the stairs.

A familiar face appeared in the dim light.

It was Wang Zhao’s mother, who had just returned from her walk. She was now glaring at her daughter with an angry expression.

Wang Zhao felt her head start to ache again.
