From the very beginning when Meng Jun and Li Ruantang fall off the cliff together, although he initially pulls her down to avoid implicating the girl he admires, Wei Yunruo, as they go through life and death situations, his heart can’t help but be moved by Li Ruantang’s selfless care and protection of him. When he overhears that the family who rescued them has ulterior motives towards him, in a moment of quick-witted self-preservation, he claims to be Li Ruantang’s husband.

As they navigate village life while letting Li Ruantang’s injuries heal, the walls around Meng Jun’s heart slowly melt under her tender care.

When Li Ruantang suddenly loses her memory of him after pushing herself too hard to save a villager. Meng Jun’s world shatters. He clings to her sleeve, tears streaming down his face as he pleads with her to remember him. The light in his eyes dims and his voice cracks with despair. Yet despite his devastation, he doesn’t blame her, only blaming himself for not taking better care of her.

When they return to the capital and Meng Jun is told Li Ruantang has died in battle. He completely breaks down sobbing, feeling like he can’t breathe, like his heart has been mercilessly crushed. He becomes a shell of himself, a husk of a man lying motionless in bed, his spirit shattered beyond repair. Only the slim hope that he can still marry into her household and mourn her properly as her widower gives him the will to live.

Yet miraculously, she returns to him, though disguised and scarred. In a poignant moment, when Meng Jun recognizes her through the veil, he gently traces her scars with trembling fingers, pouring all his love into the whispered words “I’m not afraid.” Tears of relief replace tears of sorrow. His uncontainable smile could rival the sun as he relishes holding her again, peppering her with affectionate gestures and bashfully flirting in a way he never dared to before, lest she disappear once more.
