Throughout the story, Xu Muzhou’s emotions towards Fang Chuxing are depicted as an intense, all-consuming obsession that borders on the pathological. The depth of Xu Muzhou’s feelings is revealed in moments of vulnerability, his fragile emotional state hinges entirely on her attention and approval. When she seems to pull away, he experiences acute distress and anxiety.

At the same time, there is a manipulative edge to Xu Muzhou’s actions. He deliberately puts himself in situations where Fang Chuxing must care for him, exploiting her sense of duty. He uses his asthma attacks and delicate health to evoke her sympathy and protectiveness.
